έλαιον — Religion, Ancient Greece + Mythology
Elaion / έλαιον means olive oil and is commonly used to refer to the anointing oil in the bible.
In the bible, elaion was figuratively referred to as the dwelling (empowerment) of the Holy Spirit and used for fuel for lamps, for healing of the sick and for anointing the head and body.
“While all true believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, none can give their oil to someone else (see Mt 25:3-8). Each person must seek (find) the Lord for themself.”
Greeks were the first to cultivate olives thousands of years ago. In The Homeric hymn of Aphrodite, the goddess cleans up her body and anoints it with elaion and a scene in the Odessey also makes reference to olive oil, “the care taken with Ulysses includes his anointing with elaion“. The use of elaion as an anointment for clothes to maintain their sleekness after wash is also confirmed by archeological evidence as a Mycenaean practice.
