Around 200BC, Kallimachos (Callimachus), a renowned poet and head of the Alexandrian Library, which at the time was the greatest centre of learning in the world and housed hundreds of thousands of books, compiled a catalogue of holdings which he called Pinakes (Tablets or Lists). It is believed that the entire literary corpus of Ancient Greece was kept at the library, together with works by Aristotle, Sophocles, and Euripides, among others. Pinakes has been acknowledged as the first library catalog in Western civilisation.
