General Information
General Information
Our hypoallergenic, radiance-enhancing, all-natural Greek sea sponges are a zero-waste and sustainable alternative to your foam beauty blender, face washer, shower and bath washers.
Natural Sea Sponges possess remarkable powers of regeneration. Their natural reproductive cycles ensure they can re-grow lost parts and pieces broken off by water currents. They can also settle in another location and re-grow into a clone of the parent sponge.
The natural sea sponge is a renewable resource from the sea which has been harvested for over 150yrs. Wild harvest divers use specific techniques to collect the sea sponges, carefully preserving the base (roots) of the sponge. If not harvested, sea sponges have a life span of approximately 10 years, harvesting allows for re-generation and extended life.
Sea Sponge populations are harvested carefully to ensure minimal disruption to the harvest area and to assist and promote regeneration of the sea sponges for future harvest and collection. It is in our best interests to ensure the long-term sustainability of sea sponges in their natural environment, and for this reason we promote and support only sustainable harvest and collection methods.
κυκλάδες — Ancient Greece + Mythology
The Greeks have been using sea sponges both for their hygiene and for cleaning their houses since antiquity.
The use of sponges is first attested in the 8th century B.C. by the epic poet Homer. In his Iliad, the god Hephaestus cleans his face, his hands and his chest with a sponge and in the Odyssey, the servants in the palace of Odysseus clean the tables after the meals of the Suitors of Penelope with sponges.
Sponges were also used in writing, painting, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and the army, protecting the soldiers from the friction between the armour and the body, during the Roman and the Byzantine period.
There is also a reference to the sponges in the Bible, in the New Testament, when a Roman soldier offers Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar wine at the Crucifixion. After the final end of Venetocracy in Greece (14th-16th century A.D.) the Western crusaders introduced the use of sponges in Central and Western Europe and made Venice a major sponge trading center.
